Antonio "Tony" Lopez

January 17, 1952 — February 29, 2024

Antonio “Tony” Lopez was born January 17, 1952 in Silver City New Mexico and departed this life on Thursday, February 29, 2024, at Raymond G. Murphy Department of VA Medical Center at the age of 72 following an extended illness.

Tony was preceded in death by his parents Pedro and Elena Lopez, along with his brother Jose ”Joe” Lopez.

He is survived by his two sons: Antonio Lopez (Tawanda), David Lopez; sister Matilda Lopez, grandchildren: Tierra Lopez, Tarrien Lopez and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Tony enlisted in the US Navy on June 28, 1972 aboard the USS Gridley in El Paso, Texas. From there he served his country over the next four years exiting honorably in 1976. He settled in San Diego California where he was employed with the NAASCO Ship Yard. While in San Diego Tony was married to Remona Thomas and became a father.

In the 1990’s he relocated to Albuquerque, New Mexico where he resided permanently. As an employee at Kirkland Airforce Commissary, he brought joy and smiles to patrons every time he was around. During this time he rekindled a romance with and later married his longtime friend Trinidad Lopez.

Prior to his brother’s passing, Tony spent many days and nights with him fixing cars, laughing and reminiscing about the old days.

In his final days, he enjoyed motorcycling, cooking, fishing, traveling and being the life of the party among family and friends.

Pallbearers will be George Martinez, George Heidke, Jesse Sisneros, Frank Heidke, John and Nicholas Housermann.

Honorary Pallbearers will be David Torres and Larry Lauer.

Tony's Life Celebration will begin with a Visitation on Thursday, March 14, 2024, at 6:00pm at Salazar Mortuary located at 400 Third St. SW, 87102. Rosary will be recited at 6:30pm. Mass will be held on Friday, March 15, 2024 at 10:00am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church located at 309 Stover Ave. SW, 87102. He will be laid to rest at 1:30pm at the Santa Fe National Cemetery located at 501 N. Guadalupe St. 87501.

We the family would like to extend a special heartfelt thank you to the attending doctors and staff at VA Medical Center. The attention and care exhibited were exemplary and exceptional. We are forever grateful.

Finally, to the matriarch Auntie Tillie, thank you for your love, consistency and sacrifice for us. You have shown amazing strength and fortitude through everything….always.
