Donald Fullbright was born March 25, 1931 to Arthur and Martha Blum Fullbright, at home in Lynn Hollow, Winsconsin. He and his twin sister, Doris, were the youngest of 7 children.
He joined the US Navy at the young age of 15 with the signature of his father, and served them well for 24 years. With the formal schooling of only the 8th Grade, he went on to further his education in the Navy. He served as a Gunner's Mate and later as a Nuclear Weapons Instructor/Inspector retiring in 1970 as a CPO.
He married Nicanora Romo also in 1970 and were about to see their 47th anniversary this fall.
After retiring Donald worked for a short period in construction and later opened an auto mechanics garage with his good buddy, Andy Andrews. It was called Don and Andy's to which he retired for good eventually. Donald enjoyed delivering goods to needy school children and held many fundraisers at the FRA in Albuquerque. He also drove in Stock car races in Albuquerque and New Mexico racing mostly at Speedway Park off of south Eubank. Many remember his many cars, mostly with the number 44 on the sides. In his later years Donald was a big Earnhardt fan and a fan of Nascar in general traveling also to many dirt tracks between New Mexico and his beloved home state of Wisconsin. With his good friend and helper Art Romero, he was able to continue to go to races.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents Arthur and Martha Fullbright, his eldest son Timothy Fullbright, his brothers and sisters Lorraine, Evelyn, Marcella, Virginia and Melvin. Survived by his loving wife Nicanora Romo. His twin sister Doris A Pitts. Children: Donna (John) Ramp, Virginia (Gale Woodworth) Fullbright, Victoria Fullbright, Stephen (Colleen) Fullbright, Donna Torres, Charles (Virginia) Fullbright, Patrick(Tammy) Fullbright, Albert Torres. Many grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and ex wife Jeanette Boyd and very special nephew Ricardo Torres.
Donald's Life Celebration will begin with a Rosary at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 5th at Salazar Mortuary, 400 Third St. SW, followed by a Catholic service. A committal service with full military honors will be held at 2:15p.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
