Edward “Eddie” Chavez, age 87, a devoted son, brother, husband, neighbor, farmer, friend, and brother-in-Christ, peacefully went to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 12, 2024, in his hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Rose Mary Chavez, brother Ernest A. Chavez, sister Lucy C. Gabaldon, and parents Juan C. and Julianita L. Chavez.
He is survived by numerous family and relatives, long-time friends, as well as, Benjamin and Rachael Garcia, his dedicated caregivers and best friends.
A longtime resident of Albuquerque, New Mexico, he spent his entire life farming in the South Valley, while also working full-time for the City of Albuquerque. A third generation farmer, he worked the land his entire life. After serving our country in the United States Air Force, Eddie returned to the South Valley to farm with the family and begin a career. Soon after his service, Eddie started his bus driving career with Greyhound Bus Lines as a Southwest Regional Bus Driver, and later retired with the City of Albuquerque after 27 years of service driving a local city transit bus.
Eddie, was nicknamed by many neighbors as “honorary mayor” of Lagunitas. A mainstay in the South Valley Lagunitas community — always to be found on the porch with his newspaper, waving at every vehicle that drove by. A favorite pastime of his, was cooking his famous Green Chile stew, rice, and calabacitas. Lastly, he loved driving the neighborhood in his golf cart —while his dog, Sammy could be seen running alongside him or, hitching a ride home next to his Master.
After being Saved (Born Again), Uncle Eddie's first priority was to be a disciple of Christ. Eddie’s life was a testament to his unwavering faith and his commitment to helping others.
Eddie’s family is forever indebted to the countless neighbors, friends, home-care nurses, Morningstar caregivers, and extended family that took time to visit, share a meal, talk about farming, and Jesus. Your kindness and love will never be forgotten.
