Isabelle Ogaz Tellez, beloved mother, wife, and friend passed away peacefully in her sleep, surrounded by family, on August 3, 2024, just shy of her 100th birthday.
She was preceded in death by her husband Louis Tellez.
Isabelle is survived by her three daughters: Inez Tellez, Celia Tellez (Campbell White), Monica Tellez, son Carlos Tellez (Stephenie); three grandsons and one granddaughter: Stephen (Elyssa), Nicolas, Nathaniel, Elena Schiff, and great-grandson Wells.
She was born on August 9, 1924, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Isabelle's life was a testament to her unwavering faith, her deep love for her family, and her commitment to civil rights and helping those less fortunate.
Isabelle's journey was marked by her fearless and tireless efforts to uplift the Hispanic community. She was instrumental in helping to build a national organization (The American GI Forum) that became a cornerstone for Hispanic Civil Rights. She founded the Hispanic Education Foundation and established The American GI Forum Endowment to UNM. Her dedication to service was unparalleled; she spent countless hours advocating for equality and providing support wherever it was needed. Isabelle's work transcended barriers, and she became a respected figure, known for her integrity, passionate involvement and her ability to inspire others to join the cause.
Her interests painted a picture of a woman deeply rooted in her culture and faith. As a young woman she was active in the San Felipe church community. She was also an amazing cook, known for her posole, tamales and hand-made tortillas. Her meals were the soul food that brought her family and friends together.
A devout Catholic, Isabelle's spirituality was the cornerstone of her existence. Isabelle's home was a sanctuary adorned with statues of religious icons such as Fatima, Our Lady of Guadalupe, and angels. Each figure was a symbol of her dedication to God, a devotion that guided her every action and provided comfort during the trials and tribulations of her long life.
She was fierce and loyal, traits that she carried into every aspect of her life, from her advocacy work to the bonds she forged with those around her.
Isabelle's memory will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her spirit, teachings, and the love she shared will continue to inspire and guide us. While we mourn her loss, we also celebrate a life beautifully lived—a life that was a true embodiment of grace, perseverance, and love.
As we bid farewell to Isabelle Ogaz Tellez, we hold on to the memories and the lessons she imparted. Her journey may have come to a close, but her influence will remain a guiding light for generations to come.
Rest in peace, Isabelle, and may your soul find eternal joy in the embrace of the Lord you so dearly loved.
