Josiaphine "Jozzie" Sandoval, also known as Momma Josie, was a spirited soul defined by her love for nature and her groundbreaking career, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 17, 2023, in Albuquerque, New Mexico at the age of 76.
Josie was preceded in death by her life long partner Anthony “Tony” Dimas, parents Simon and Emma Vigil, grandmother Fedencia Vialpando, and sister Juanita Gallegos.
She is survived by her three children: Emma Sandoval and Fabian, Simon Sandoval and Cindy, Beverly Garcia and Michael; grandchildren: Cruzita Sandoval and Matthew, Raymond Orozco, Orlando Orozco, Monique Casaus, Fabian Casaus and Anthony Sandoval; great-grandkids: Olivia and Savanna Orozco, many brothers and sisters; she had a very special relationship with her sisters; Emma Martinez, Cris Montoya and Juan, Grace Valdez and Felix, Flora Velasquez, Berlinda Barrera and Rayo, also many nieces and nephews.
Her faith in the Lord was her strength throughout her life. She is remembered for carrying the beauty and resilience of the Southwest. Josie's passion for the outdoors was evident in her love for plants, gardening, and flowers—a true testament to her nurturing spirit.
An avid adventurer, Josie adored camping, fishing, and hunting with her family and friends. Her collection of angels, Indian dolls, fake and real plants brought her joy and reflected the diversity of her creativity and talents.
Breaking barriers in a male-dominated field, Josie’s occupation of operating heavy equipment as the first New Mexican woman showcased her remarkable strength and tenacity. After retirement she continued to work as a tile setter along side her life long partner Tony and her son’s Simon and Fabian.
Josie was well known for her loving nature, handy skills, outgoing personality, and her spit fire reputation. She leaves behind a legacy of courage and strength. Her God given super power was bringing neighborhoods together and creating an everlasting bond between them. She honored those she loved by being a mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to all those she met.
Josie’s memory will forever bloom in the hearts of those who knew her.
Josie's Life Celebration will begin with a Rosary on Friday, January 19, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. followed by a Mass at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe parish.
