Manuel A. Tafoya, a happy, kind soul and beacon of knowledge and love, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren on September 4, 2024, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Manuel was preceded in death by his parents Alberto and Felicitas Tafoya; and siblings, Emma Tafoya, Max Tafoya, Leo Tafoya, Priscilla Esch, and Susana Tafoya.
He is survived by his wife Mary Tafoya; children: Michael Tafoya, Phyllis Watley and her husband Saleem, Elizabeth Tafoya, Jerry “Khalil” Tafoya and his wife Ferouz; grandchildren: Saleem Watley and his wife Hadjer, Christiana Sanchez and her husband Mickey, Kameelah Watley, Jamal Watley, Sarah Tafoya, Antonio Tafoya, Khadija Watley, Najam Tafoya, Nailah Tafoya; great-grandchildren: Saddiq Watley, Santiago Sanchez, Samiya Watley, Kai Phan, Sebastián Sanchez; siblings: Vangie Tafoya, Ruby Martinez and her husband Norman, Lucy Tafoya, Santiago “Jim” Tafoya and his wife Ruby; widows of his siblings: Rose Tafoya, Eliva Tafoya, Tom Esch, and a large extended family and many, many friends.
Born on February 3, 1934, in Taos, New Mexico, Manuel's life was a testament to the power of love, family, learning, and storytelling. A Korean War veteran, Manuel returned home with a heart full of courage and a mind set on making a difference. He channeled his experiences into writing and also teaching, where his thoughtful and intelligent approach inspired countless students over the years. Manuel's love for writing and books was his true passion, and he found great joy in them.
His marriage to his wife of 64 years was one of true love and commitment. He and his wife were often surrounded by the love and company of their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. During his last months, he was blessed with constant support, love, and assistance from his family.
Manuel was also known for his sweet tooth. He was often found with goodies and treats, and was always eager to share them with others. He enjoyed watching football but especially the Dallas Cowboys. His involvement in his Men's group and the Men’s Wellness group showcased his dedication to learning and personal growth. He was a people-person who made friends wherever he went. His stories and teachings, often laced with humor and wisdom, will endure, a lasting treasure for all who knew him.
His legacy is one of sharing countless stories and laughter, cherishing time together with family and friends, and a lifelong quest for knowledge. Memories of him will continue to live on in the hearts and minds of those he touched. His vibrant personality will be dearly and deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Manuel’s life celebration will begin with a visitation on Friday, September 13, 2024, at 11:00 am at Reflections Chapel located at 2400 Washington NE, 87110. PLEASE NOTE: There is extra parking across the street in the Pavilions On San Mateo directly south of Reflections Chapel. Service will begin at 1:00. Manuel will be laid to rest at 2:30pm at Mount Calvary Cemetery located at 1900 Edith Blvd NE, 87102. The family would like to invite everyone to rejoice in a reception from 3:30 pm - 5:30 pm at UNM Continuing Education, 1634 University Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87131, North Building Ballroom B and C.
Pallbearers will be Saleem Watley, Jamal Watley, Mickey Sanchez, Antonio Tafoya, Khadija Watley, Naliah Tafoya, Saddiq Watley, and Santiago Sanchez.
