Like a dove flying home, Margie Torres, 82, went home to be with the Lord on February 10, 2015. She passed away peacefully at her home in the arms of her husband of 57 years.
A lifelong resident of Albuquerque, Margie was loved by family and friends alike.
Born to Senovia and Premitivo Saavedra in 1932, Margie was the oldest of eight brothers and sisters. She attended Albuquerque High and was always proud of her Bulldog heritage. After graduating from Albuquerque High, she met the love of her life, Ernest Torres.
Margie prided herself on being a homemaker and an excellent baker. Though trained only by her mother's side in her tiny childhood kitchen, Margie was known for her excellent Mexican food. When friends would ask where they wanted to go for dinner, "Margie's kitchen" would always be offered.
When her two children were little, all their friends would be at her house to eat freshly made tortillas as they came off the comal. For Christmas, she would begin baking and making candy in October so everyone could get a full tray of her homemade goodies. Then on Christmas Day, she would open her house to celebrate her favorite holiday with family and friends as everyone gathered to enjoy her baked goods and candies. Through thick times and thin, Margie managed a well-functioning house so everyone's lives would be just a little brighter.
Margie had many passions throughout her fulfilling life. Foremost was her undying love for her husband. Margie loved her family; she was glue that kept the family running smoothly. When her children were in school, she could always be found helping the teachers grade papers and planning the class parties.
Without a doubt, Margie loved traveling, especially in the RV. From Yellowstone to the beaches of southern Mexico, she, Ernest, and many friends and relatives enjoyed the leisure provided by the open road. She also enjoyed shopping, dragging her husband to malls for hours at a time.
Margie was a loving, selfless daughter, mother, and friend. As her own mother battled through her terminal illness, Margie served as her primary caretaker. From late nights when her mother was not feeling well to doctors' appointments to general housework, Margie never left her side. For her children and grandchildren, Margie worked tirelessly to provide a nurturing environment.
She potty trained most every child in her reach and also taught them how to read, often at the same time. She spent hours with the little ones, teaching them everything she knew.
While she would be at the stove making tortillas for dinner, Margie would hand a ball of masa to each of the kids so they could practice flattening them into a perfect circle.
Margie was greeted home by her mother, Senovia Saavedra; her father, Premitivo Saavedra; her brother, Johnny Saavedra; and numerous other family members and friends.
She is survived by her husband, Ernest Torres; daughter, Leola Sena; and grandson, Justin Sena; her son, Jerry Torres and his wife, Brenda; grandson Adam Torres and his wife Rosa; great-grandson Joe Torres; and granddaughter Kristian Ritter. She also leaves behind a large extended family and innumerable friends. Her memory will thrive in them all.
