Rose Chávez died peacefully on the Day of Ascension, Sunday, June 2, 2019. She was 92.
A devout Catholic, she was a steadfast follower of Padre Pio’s teachings. Her faith was spread widely as she witnessed to others so that they may lead a more observant Christian life.
Mary Rose Petra Chávez was born on November 18, 1926 in Mosquero, New Mexico. A direct descendant of Don Pedro Gomez Duran y Chaves ( who arrived in New Mexico on Christmas Eve, 1600) and Fernando II Duran y Chaves, a founding family of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Her father Antonio F. Chávez, was the County Treasurer and Postmaster General of Harding County at the time of her birth. Her mother Avelina Gallegos was a homemaker whose family (grandfather Jesus Maria Gallegos) founded the Gallegos Ranch in Gallegos, New Mexico.
At age 6, Rose and her family moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico where she attended school, graduating from Santa Fe High School in 1944. Rose went on to attend the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque earning a Bachelors degree in Education in 1948. She taught in the Albuquerque school system for many years.
Rose is survived by her brother Anthony M Chávez ( Lourdes), and nieces/nephews Gloria Popowski, Don Casados, Linda Gehrmann Chávez, Becky Schultz, Michael Chávez, Robert Chávez, Anna Marie Chavez, Karla Chavez Divney, Matthew Chavez, Gregory Chavez, and Brian Chavez.
She was preceded in death by her parents Antonio and Lina Chávez, siblings Lily Casados, (Ernie Casados), Rebecca Chávez, Raymond Chávez, (Connie Chávez), Leandro Chávez, daughter Rosalyn Delgado, nephews Mark Chávez , Bob Popowski and John Schultz.
