Raymond J. Montoya

July 3, 1947 — September 27, 2024

Raymond J. Montoya, known affectionately as Ray by his friends and family, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 27, 2024, in his hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents George Montoya and Julia Campos-Montoya

He is survived by his wife Theresa Montoya, sons: Scott Montoya, Robert Montoya, daughter Arlene Montoya, brother Michael Montoya, sister Melanie Montoya-Martinez, daughter-in-law Robin, grandsons: Anthony, Joshua, and granddaughter Marissa.

Born on July 3, 1947, also in Albuquerque, Raymond's life was a testament to his loving, selfless, and friendly nature.

Raymond's passion for the great outdoors was evident to all who knew him. He found solace and joy in walking. While his pace may have slowed over the years – he walked actively, daily, until he could no longer manage it independently.

His love for outdoor experiences extended to family camping trips to many of New Mexico’s forests and National Parks, where he cherished the time in the fresh air and nature. A true New Mexico soul, Raymond's love for New Mexico music, blues, county, R and B, soul and jazz filled his home with warmth and rhythm. This was very true on Saturday mornings. Raymond created a welcoming atmosphere for all who entered especially for those that wanted to sing along to song or dance a fast shuffle.

An avid fan of the Browns, Raymond seldom missed a game, and his enthusiasm for his team was infectious. His dream of seeing a Browns game in person came true last year when he traveled with his sons to a game and complete NFL experience in California.

His interests were diverse. They ranged from hunting and fishing to a fondness for watching history-based television shows. Raymond collected things from outdoor décor to walking canes and it spoke to his tendency to see usefulness in most items that others may have discarded. Raymond’s collection of Coca-Cola merchandise was a way that anyone could bring him a trinket and make him smile- especially if it had the Coca-Cola logo emblazed on it.  All of this was a simple joy in his life.

During his working years of life, Raymond was a proud Albuquerque Public School employee. He called Del Norte High School home. Students, teachers and administrators alike would say their “work family” was better because of Raymond. Years after retirement, Raymond’s time at DNHS and his impact on individuals has stood the test of time.

Above all, Raymond was a devoted family man, always striving to provide for his loved ones and those who found their way to his doorstep. His selfless nature was the cornerstone of his existence, and his legacy of kindness and generosity will live on in the hearts of those he touched.

Raymond's presence in the community was that of a social butterfly, always ready with a smile and a helping hand. He will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Raymond Montoya's life was a beautiful journey that will be fondly remembered and celebrated by many.
