Ruben Arthur Lucero, age 61 and a life-long resident of Albuquerque, passed away on September 30, 2017 after a brief battle with an aggressive cancer. He was born in Albuquerque on June 20, 1956 to Preciliano Lucero and Josephine Cano. Ruben was preceded in death by his father, and is survived by his mother; daughters, Trinidad Lucero and Sandra Lucero; partner, Alberta Lucero; and cousin, Anthony Gomez - all of whom were at his side in his last days.
Ruben was raised in Albuquerque, and was raised as a true "ranchero" as a young man - with a great love for horses. He attended Rio Grande High School, graduating in 1974; NM Highlands University, and the University of New Mexico - graduating in 2010 with a degree in Theology. While he served as a Corrections Officer in the New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department, Ruben used his degree and relied on his devout Catholic faith to encourage and inspire his CYFD kids, who deeply cared for and respected him. He loved New Mexico history, and enjoyed the study of local customs and folklore.
Ruben's Life Celebration will begin with a Rosary on Thursday, October 5, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. at Salazar Mortuary, followed by a Reception in the Salazar Life Event Center. Mass will be held on Friday October 6, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Family Church in Pintada, New Mexico. Burial will follow Services at Holy Family Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Armando Lucero, Brian Lucero, Alix Garcia, Lorenzo Maldonado, Chris Maldonado, and Brandon Krawic.
Ruben was a good and true gentleman, quiet and reserved, but generous with his great heart. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed. "Then I heard a voice from heaven say, "Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on." "Yes," says the Spirit, "they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them." Revelation 14:13.
