Sherman "Bill" Harviston, a treasured soul whose laughter and wisdom touched many, passed away on Monday, February 19, 2024, at the age of 91.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy (Jantz) Harviston.
Bill is survived by three children: Kay (Richard) Stevens, Deborah Montano, Corby (Margie) Harviston; four grandchildren: Devon (Carolyn) Stevens, Kyle (Devin) Reeves, Adrianna (Hugh) Harviston, Andrew (Brittany) Harviston; and three great-grandchildren: Bryce, Brooklyn, and Kolten Harviston.
Born on March 12, 1932, Bill's journey through life was marked by a deep love for the simple pleasures – fishing, family, and the satisfaction of a hard day's work.
Bill was a man who lived for the outdoors, his heart as wide and welcoming as the New Mexico skies under which he spent countless hours waiting for the next big catch. His love for fishing was only matched by his love for his family, and he often combined the two, creating cherished memories on tranquil lakesides with his children by his side. A meat and potatoes man through and through, Bill's eyes would light up at the mere mention of catfish and cornbread – a testament to his simple, yet rich taste in life's offerings.
Professionally, Bill was known for his unmatched skill and dedication as a carpenter. His hands, both strong and precise, helped to shape the skyline of Albuquerque in the 1960s, as he contributed to the construction of bridges that still stand today as testaments to his talent and hard work. His legacy is etched in the very bones of the city, a silent tribute to a man who built more than just structures, but also built a community.
True to his disciplined and determined nature, Bill walked two miles every day, a ritual that kept his spirit as sharp as his wit. Friends, family, and even casual acquaintances could always count on him for a funny quip followed by a gentle smile, a combination that made him a beloved figure in his community.
In remembering Bill, one cannot help but think of the words funny, wise, and gentle – a trifecta of qualities that truly encapsulates the essence of the man he was. As we bid farewell to Sherman "Bill" Harviston, we celebrate a life lived fully, a journey marked by laughter, love, and an enduring legacy that will continue to inspire those who knew him for generations to come. His was a life well-lived, and he will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to cross his path.
