Tom Scharmen passed away on December 1, 2020, year of Covid 19.
For this reason we will not be able to commemorate his parting as he deserved and would have liked, surrounded by family and friends. We will remember Tom in private, each one of us in our hearts, grateful to have had the chance to share our time with him along this path called life.
Tom was predeceased by his parents Merril E. Scharmen and Audrey Y. Frost.
He is survived by his siblings: Peggy, Debbie, Kim; his ex wife Veronica Fuentes; son Pablo Scharmen; daughter Adria Scharmen, and his first granddaughter Nour Lovisa.
Thomas Scharmen was employed for over 20 years in the NM Dept. of Health. He was a public health advocate, a visionary, a mentor and a hero to many. He developed the NM Community Data Collaborative in an effort to bring data to communities who could use it in policy change. Before NM he lived in Mexico, where his passion for public health started in the village of Urique and through the Copper Canyon region where he worked as a health promoter. He found love, married Veronica and had his two children in Chihuahua. The homestead he built in Urique, Entre Amigos is still open to guests and his long lasting paradise. Before Mexico he was a dedicated student of philosophy, literature and art, wrote poetry and played the guitar. This is how we envision him now, in the canyon, tending the garden, playing music, illuminated by the starry sky.
