Timothy Andrew Callahan III, a devoted family man and steward of New Mexico’s lands, passed away on Thursday, January 2, 2025, after several years of illness.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
Tim is survived by his wife Kathleen; sister Sharon; brother Peter; daughter Erin, son-in-law Paul, and grandson Rowan Timothy.
Known for his biting wit and endless puns, Tim could light up a room with a well-timed story or a clever joke. He was often spotted behind the wheel of his beloved 1965 Jaguar or walking his cherished Boston Terrier, Dooley, around the neighborhood.
Tim was born in Baltimore to Dr. Timothy Andrew Callahan II and Virginia Dooley Callahan, both of whom served as medical professionals during WWII. At a young age, the family relocated to Mosquero, NM, where Tim’s father served as a small-town practitioner. After losing his father in his early teens, Tim often remarked that the Mosquero community helped shape him and his siblings.
Following a tour of duty during the Vietnam War, Tim sought a peaceful way to serve his community. He earned a Master of Public Administration from the University of New Mexico and began a career devoted to public service. As a District Resource Manager with the NM State Land Office, Tim managed public lands with a deep passion for preserving natural beauty while securing funding for education. He took special pride in collaborating with his colleagues at the State Land Office on the development lease that helped establish the thriving Mesa del Sol community.
Above all, Tim treasured his family, friends, and the vibrant landscapes, people, and animals of New Mexico.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Audubon Society in Tim’s honor at the link below.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
